Once a staple of London's high streets, pie and mash was the food of the working class particularly in South and East London due to the proximity to the Docklands. Since the mid 1800s to the present day they have existed but now in dwindling numbers.  Socio-economic and demographic changes in these areas caused a decline in their numbers but through social media and further interest in different cuisines has meant that as of 2024 thirty-four pie shops still exist.
