In 1993 Alpern discovered whilst staying at her friend's apartment near Wall Street that a small backroom window provided a view of the bathroom of an illegal lap-dancing club. Using a telephoto lens she saw the stock-brokers and businessman of Wall Street who frequented handing over money, taking drugs and having sex. Whilst being seen as controversial the series propelled Alpern's career.
