Hamburg-based photographer Andreas Herzau presents a volume of images spanning the years 2000 to 2002: a puzzle, a source of bewilderment. He shows black-and-white street scenes and plays of colour in the park; he depicts people who are horrified, smiling, or fearful; he shows the sky filled with aeroplanes—yet initially withholds the year each image was taken. Those who wish to know must wait until the book’s penultimate page to find the clue. The trick works. It is not always easy to assign the images to the ‘before’ or the ‘after.’
